NegOr, Siquijor take the first move to integrate nutrition in their Local Development Plans

In their bid to strengthen nutrition program implementation, core members of local nutrition committees of Negros Oriental and Siquijor provinces attended a workshop on the Integrating Nutrition in the Local Development Plans organized by the National Nutrition Council (NNC). The workshop was held on 10-13 September at the Southview Hotel, Dumaguete City.

Actively participated in by nutrition action officers, budget officers, planning officers and local nutrition program coordinators, the workshop had a total of ninety-two participants coming from 17 municipalities and 4 cities in Negros Oriental and 5 municipalities from the province of Siquijor.

Brgy. Panlautan, Siquijor’s Livelihood for Nutrition

Siquijor Province – With the barangay named after “utan” which refers to local vegetables, Barangay Panlautan of the municipality of Siquijor in Siquijor Province, is proud of their community’s food gardens and its effects on the nutrition status of the children in the barangay.

These efforts has contributed to the barangay’s feat as 1st Runner Up in the 2019 Search for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee in the Region.

Boctol, Balilihan, Bohol is CV’s Best Barangay

Bohol Province – Receiving this year’s Most Outstanding Barangay in the Region award, Barangay Boctol of the Municipality of Balilihan in the Province Bohol certainly did not achieve it overnight and here’s how they got the most coveted award: Barangay Boctol of the municipality of Balilihan, Bohol has, despite it being a largely agricultural community, been facing food consumption problems in recent times.

The Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) has found out that more and more families are putting up unhealthy foods in their dinner tables. Call it ease and access or a consequence of modernization, these families have been consuming instant, high sodium, high fat, pre-packed processed food.

A Grand Nutrition Awards for the Old and New

Cebu City – Conducted annually, the Grand Nutrition Awards (GNA) is an event that many local nutrition committees in Central Visayas are already familiar with. However, the 2019 GNA, which is held at the Bai Hotel, Mandaue City on 09 August 2019, introduces new awards in lieu to the region having a transition of evaluation tools used.

As Central Visayas still has a contender for the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition Award this year, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) was directed by the National Evaluation Team to make use of the old Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) tool, but have also decided to use the MELLPI Pro tool to help local nutrition committee transition easier to the new tool which will take official effect next year.

27 Nutrition HRH set to improve CV’s NutSit

Cebu City – Twenty-Seven (27) Human Resource for Health (HRH) under the Nutrition Deployment Program took oath last 02 July 2019 at the Pacific Grand Ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.

Twenty (20) Nutritionist – Dietitians and seven (7) nurses pledged their commitments during the said event presided by no other than the Regional Director of DOH CHD 7, Dr. Jaime S. Bernadas together with the guest of honor, DOH Assistant Secretary for Visayas and Mindanao, Dr. Abdullah Dumama Jr.

NNC 7 launches its own Internet Radio

Cebu City – Everyone across the nation and around the globe can now listen to good music and great nutrition information through the world wide web as NNC 7 launches its most ambitious nutrition advocacy project as of yet, NNC 7 Radio.

Largely Cebuano-based, this internet radio will be launched on 08 April 2018, Monday, with the first broadcast slotted at 3:45 PM after the ribbon cutting and blessing of the NNC 7 internet radio station. Immediate Past President of Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 (MIND 7) Mr. Raul “Bong” Roxas will anchor the first broadcast with RNPC Dr. Parolita A. Mission as main discussant. RNC Chair and DOH CHD 7 Regional Director Jaime S. Bernadas, KBP Cebu Chapter President Fr. Roberto “Bobby” Ebiza and MIND 7 President Ms. Michelle L. Palaubsanon are also expected to be present to give their respective messages for this pioneering effort of nutrition advocates in Central Visayas.

Extended Maternity Leave: A Victory to Mothers and Babies

Cebu City – From the current 60 days, the recently signed Republic Act No. 11210 or otherwise known as the “105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law” extends paid maternity leave to 105 days with an option to extend for 30 days without pay.

Senator Risa Honteveros, who is the author and principal sponsor of the law said that the passage of such law is “a victory for mothers and their families making the Philippines at par with international standards” in terms of the minimum number of maternity leave days.

Celebrate Women, Celebrate Nutrition

Cebu City – As the country celebrates women’s month this March, we also take time to revel how empowered women contribute to better nutrition not just for herself, but for the people in her household as well as those in her community.

The National Nutrition Council recognizes the importance of investing in women for a better community. This can be done in two ways: first to invest in women’s health and nutrition is also an investment towards a better life for the future generation and second, women empowerment for food security and child rearing ensures that the family is well taken cared for.
