Carbohydrates: Good or Bad?

healthy diet

Did you know that carbohydrates are the main source of energy in the body.

Carbohydrates are your body’s main source of fuel. When you take in food, your body breaks down its sugars and starches and absorbs them into your bloodstream. At this point, they become glucose, or blood sugar.Your body needs glucose to have the energy to do everything.

In addition, your brain needs glucose to function properly. If you don’t take in enough carbohydrates, you can become weak, lethargic and unable to focus on even simple tasks.

However, too much of these can actually increase your risks of overnutrition, which can lead to the development of certain non-communicable diseases like cancer, type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Stay fit and healthy by consuming preferably complex carbohydrates like root crops, corn and wheat. And always remember to eat in moderation, variety and balance. / Photo and text by National Nutrition Council Region VII
